Verification of measuring instruments
Verification of measuring instruments is the whole range of operations carried out by bodies of the Federal Metrological Service of the Russian Federation (and other authorized bodies) with a purpose of evaluating and confirming the compliance of measuring instruments with the established requirements. Verification of measuring instruments in Russia is regulated by the Law of the Russian Federation "On ensuring the uniformity of measurements".

Positive verification results are validated by the verification seal or verification certificate.

The form of the verification seal and the verification certificate, and the procedure of sealing are established by the Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology.

The Interstate Council on standardization, metrology and certification of the Commonwealth of Independent States has established the following kinds of verification:

  • Initial verification is carried out at the release of a measuring instrument from manufacturing, after repair, when selling or importing in batches.
  • Periodic verification is used for measuring instruments which are in operation or storage. It is done after set periods of time.
  • Occasional verification is carried out before the time of periodic verification of a measuring instrument.
  • Inspection verification is performed by a body of the Federal Metrological Service as a part of the federal supervision of conditions and applications of measuring instruments.
  • Complete verification evaluates metrological characteristics of a measuring instrument as a whole.
  • Feature-based verification derives metrological characteristics of a measuring instrument from characteristics of its parts.
  • Sampling verification refers to verification of several measuring instruments, randomly selected from a batch. The whole batch is then evaluated according to the sample results.
